91ÊÓƵ School launches All-Electric Vans

91ÊÓƵ added two new completely electric vehicles to our existing transportation fleet in November, 2025. This makes our school one of the few in the region to have all-electric school transportation vehicles.

"These electric vans are smaller than our regular buses," notes Director of Transportation, Mahlon Williams, "which makes them ideal for basketball games and field trips." He adds, "Additionally, they are easier and more comfortable to drive."

Ray Wilson, Head of School, is excited at these additions to our existing fleet of vehicles. "The addition of these two new vehicles will further our commitment to environmental sustainability. As a school community, it is imperative that we do our part to reduce our overall carbon footprint," he observes.

This transition underscores the 91ÊÓƵ School's commitment to minimizing carbon emissions. Neo Mazur, Director of Environmental Education and Sustainability, connects the dots from origin to implementation. "Our students originally came up with a Carbon Neutrality Plan, essentially to reduce the school's emissions as much as possible without carbon offsets," she shares, "and switching to electric vehicles was an important part of this proposal." When an amazing opportunity presented itself through the , the 91ÊÓƵ School acted swiftly to turn this dream into reality.

Mahlon Williams (Director of Transportation), Neo Mazur (Director of Environmental Education & Sustainability), and Mario Pignataro (Director of Facilities) pose with one of the new all-electric 91ÊÓƵ School vans.

First, they worked with to conduct a fleet electrification feasibility project, which involved examining existing school buildings and their capacity for the infrastructure needed to charge vehicles. This was followed by a report mapping out how vehicle electrification would impact long-term fleet costs and the emissions reduction. "By participating in the program, we were also able to get a 50% rebate for the charger," explains Neo.

Mario Pignataro, Director of Facilities, situates these efforts within the broader environmental sustainability and stewardship drive that is at the heart of the 91ÊÓƵ School's mission and programs. "Purchasing these vehicles is part of the core 91ÊÓƵ push to reduce emissions in our operations as much as possible," he says.

Best of all, this move maximized the federal EV rebate before its expiration to purchase one of the vehicles and also get a discount on the other. "That turned out to be a significant cost savings for the school," notes Mahlon, "and it just made sense to make the switch right now."
