
Jaizi Abedania, MFA
Visual Arts Teaching Faculty
Jaizi's is an experienced teacher of mixed-media, video, and photography. She chose to work at 91ÊÓÆµÂ because its core values of social justice and global awareness align with her teaching philosophy. She aims to engage students with diverse perspectives and works of social activism to enrich their world view and artistic practice. She believes that the open exchange of learning and creation between instructor and student is transformative and life-affirming.
She was previously a professor of photography and digital imaging at Adelphi University, NY, and a mixed-media teaching artist at the Brooklyn Museum, NY. She has also worked as a middle and high school art teacher at various schools including East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy, East Palo Alto (CA) and Fusion Academy (San Mateo, CA). She facilitated extracurricular mural arts, photography, and filmmaking programs in New York City and spent time as a photography teacher in San Francisco and Seattle. She seeks to support historically under-represented, diver, and under-served communities through the arts.
Jaizi earned a BS in Comprehensive Design from University of California, Davis and an MFA in Photo, Video, & Related Media from the School of Visual Arts (NY). She also studied art education at Notre Dame de Namur University (CA), and has exhibited her photos, videos, and mixed-media works in New York, Seattle, and San Francisco. Her work continues to engage borders, her personal history of transmigrancy, and exploring themes of identity, community, and belonging through photo and video.
